Why the name “Fair Trade?” If you ask ten people what that term means you are likely to get ten
different answers. Yet, some repetition, like “it is similar to sustainable living.” Our little market is doing
what we can by gently negotiating with the artisans who are making these creative items for us. I can
always say “no” when given a price, and I have. |
These “folk artists” have been, in most cases, working
for many years to bring art to each of us, while earning a living wage. We also research to make certain
the art isn’t made by low-paid workers. (When talking to a weaver in Ecuador about earning a living
wage, she did not understand what I was saying. The term means nothing to them. (Maybe it was my
bad Spanish.) |

family in Mexico. Closer to home, we have wildlife photos on silk, lovely oil pastels, or "doodles” on sea
grape leaves (a recycling effort worth seeing), all made by Florida residents. |
